Donald Earl Coombe, 85, of Moss Bluff, LA passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 in Appleton, WI after a short illness.
Don was born June 17, 1931 in Barnesville, PA to Raymond Paul and Lillian Coombe. He entered the Marine Corps upon graduation from East Stroudsburg State College in Pennsylvania in 1953 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. He later rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Donald Earl Coombe, 85, of Moss Bluff, LA passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 in Appleton, WI after a short illness.
Don was born June 17, 1931 in Barnesville, PA to Raymond Paul and Lillian Coombe. He entered the Marine Corps upon graduation from East Stroudsburg State College in Pennsylvania in 1953 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. He later rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Don proudly served his country in the U S Marines for 25 years. His service took him around the world where he served in Japan, Korea, Okinawa, and Vietnam. After retiring, Don found passion enriching the lives of youth as a chemistry and physics teacher in high school and college, retiring from McNeese State University.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Don was warm and kind hearted. He loved his family and always kept them close. He was an active member of Moss Bluff Bible Church, serving as a Deacon and as AWANA Commander. In recent years, he travelled extensively around the world enjoying cruises and experiencing numerous other cultures.
He is preceded in death by his first wife Pennie in 2001, but found love again and remarried in 2013.
He is survived by his wife Diane Montgomery Sweeney Coombe; brother, Richard "Dick" Coombe (Mary);children , Nancy Coombe (Brian Wells) and Rees Coombe ( Jane Schroter); stepchildren, Kevin Sweeney and Ryan Sweeney; grandchildren, Melissa Mendez ( Jeff), Keith Daggett ( Monica), Scott Daggett, Brittany Savant (Dylan), and Kendall Coombe, and great grandchildren, Dominic Mendez, Brooklynn Savant, Brady Savant and Sullivan Daggett.
The family will be receiving guests for the visitation on Friday, December 2, 2016 from 4pm until 8pm and will resume Saturday, December 3, 2016 from 11am until the time of service at Hixson Funeral Home of Moss Bluff. The funeral service will be held at 1pm at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Old Ritchie cemetery. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at www.hixsonfuneralhomes.com
